Project management is communicating and executing a plan to guide a team to deliver the right solution for a problem.

I’m still learning.

While I do have some experience with project management, both in theory and practice, I’m always trying to expand my knowledge and experience. So far, I have mostly worked in Agile environments that use Scrum methodologies, but I’m always open to new approaches. I think it’s important to adapt my management approach based on the dynamics of the team I’m working with - what works for one team may be detrimental to the next. In all projects, I aim to strike a balance between a happy client with an on-time project, and a supported team with the opportunity to succeed and grow.

Communication

Open and honest communication with both the client and the team is crucial to the success of a project. The team should always be kept abreast of client needs and expectations, and the client should always be up to date with how the project is progressing, even if momentum is less than perfect. I feel that honesty establishes trusting relationships that ultimately lead to more successful projects.

Time Management

Timing is what makes or breaks a project. My time management approach incorporates big picture goal setting with an in depth understanding of client priorities, team strengths and capabilities, and a healthy dose of caution. I believe that time management isn’t so much about setting a schedule at the start, but dynamically responding to the ups and downs that are encountered throughout the life of the project.

Team Building

I pride myself on my ability to recognise the strengths of others. This allows me to support my team members with achieving in areas that interest them, as well as providing opportunities for growth and learning. A team’s capacity for collaboration is also incredibly important, so I try to find time for team members to diversify their skillsets in order to better understand how the rest of the team works.
